Popular Cinema

Examines the popular genres of feature films, including science-fiction, Westerns, spy and suspense films, musicals, horror and crime films. Explores the feature film as a reflection of contemporary society. Prerequisite: completion of the Genesee Community College reading proficiency.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Summarize conventions that distinguish the Major Genres of Popular Cinema from one another, including but not limited to issues of plot, character development, dialogue, or cinematography.
2. Discuss at least three historical key events that shaped the path of the film industry.
3. Differentiate the common genres of Popular Cinema.
4. Assess how specific popular films have shaped elements of the general culture (politics, mores, entertainment, etc.).
5. Identify at least eight key directors since the early 20th century.
6. Identify the basic technical and critical vocabulary of film relating to topics such as editing, lighting, cinematography, etc.
