Ceramics 2
Utilizes the potter’s wheel and hand building skills to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Emphasizes excelled mastery of clay materials including form, proportion, design, craftsmanship and personal expression. Instruction of making glazes, loading and firing kilns. Reading material, demonstrations, critiques and lectures on ceramic history supplement studio work. Two class hours, two studio hours. Prerequisite: ART 123.

Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Create a variety of ceramic artwork using a potter’s wheel.
2. Explain the chemical changes that underlie the development of ceramics from raw clay to fired piece.
3. Analyze examples of ceramic artwork for historic or contemporary aesthetic or cultural content.
4. Analyze ceramic artwork through class critiques at an intermediate level.
5. Describe the concept and intent of completed ceramic artwork.
6. Describe health and safety issues that arise from the use of ceramic materials and tools.
7. Identify the elements and principles of design in the development of wheel-thrown ceramics.
8. Refine ceramic techniques with emphasis on individual style.
9. Refine surface techniques through glaze application and decorative methods.
